A Breakdown of Generational Employment Habits
As time goes on, we are forced to often recognize changes in trends, technological progression, ongoing infrastructure, medical advancements, and more. But have we ever stopped to look at how all of these contributing factors affect our individual work habits and the way that each generation contributes to our workforce? Because of the ongoing changes, we are seeing a consistent divide between each generation and their work habits relating to skills, expectations, outlook and how they communicate, all factors of driving success.
Because of this, there is no longer room for a “one size fits all” approach in the workplace.
5 generations in the workplace:
- Generation Z (1997 - 2012)
- Millennials (1981 - 1996)
- Generation X (1965 - 1980)
- Baby boomers (1946 – 1964)
- Silent generation (1928 – 1945)
So, how do we bridge the gap in the workplace?
As we bridge the gap within the workplace, employers and managers must place focus and emphasis on team building, accommodating a variety of expectations, and educating themselves on their employee’s varying wants and needs. With that being said, multigenerational workplaces also offer amazing benefits through their wide range of education, experience, and skills. Tailoring an environment to accommodate individual needs will help bridge the gap, drive success, and allow everyone to reach their fullest potential.
Lastly, consider Gen Z employees entering the workforce for the first time in their late teens and early twenties. At a young, formative age, they were faced with a life-changing worldwide pandemic. Usually, we expect that by the age of 19, most people have gotten a few years of basic, minimum wage work experience. However, we are seeing that within today’s society, most young adults that are entering the workforce have never actually held a job before, causing a lack of work exposure to affect the mindset of these people and their work ethic, but how it will affect the workforce in the future?
