As 2020 comes to a close, we wanted to celebrate Roots Day by looking back on both this year and the roots of AtWork. In 1986 John and Glenda Hall founded a single temporary staffing agency in White Pine, Tennessee. Upgrad, as it was originally known, was grown by the Halls to 11 offices across East Tennessee in just a few short years. By 1992, recognizing both a significant regional and national need for staffing services with a personalized touch, the Halls converted their original offices into franchise locations, creating AtWork as it is known today. Since then, AtWork has developed into a national leader in the staffing industry with nearly 100 locations operating in 28 states.

From day one, our mission has been to be AtWork for You: Our employees, clients, and community partners. AtWork locations across the country are empowered to make decisions at the local level and provide award-winning service to job seekers looking to make the next move in their career, as well as leading businesses looking to grow local economies and strengthen their communities.

2020 brought new challenges to businesses and individuals across the globe. Although we cling closely to our mission and core values (Lead, Empower, and Excel) on a daily basis, we relied on these roots to help us not only survive, but also thrive throughout the pandemic. Though the pandemic took a major toll early in the year, by the end of the second quarter, revenue had begun to climb steadily back to pre-COVID levels with more growth after the second quarter.

We’re firm believers that building your business upon a strong mission and values sets you up for success and longevity, and we’ll continue to be AtWork for you!
