Taking Care of Your Mental Health during a Job Search
Searching for a job can be a trying time. Although, according to the New York Times, “research shows that people experience an increased sense of well-being just after losing their jobs, that trend reverses if they’re still hunting after 10 to 12 weeks.” Considering the uncertain job market we’re facing right now, it’s important that you keep an eye on your mental health if you’re looking for a job right now. Here are a few ways to help you take care of yourself mentally throughout this process:
Give yourself structure
When you lose a job, you also lose the structure and schedule you used to have. You may also feel as though you need to be constantly focused on your job search, but doing so can take a toll on your mental health. It’s important to take breaks to recharge, so give yourself a schedule that allows you plenty of time to job search while also maintaining a life outside of LinkedIn.
Set small goals
Your main goal right now is probably finding a job. However, the longer it takes, the longer you go without being able to say you accomplished yourself. If you set yourself small goals throughout the process, your confidence will benefit. For example, you could establish that you have a goal of sending 10 cover letters within a certain amount of time.
Make time for yourself
Although it can be difficult to focus on anything besides your job search, it’s important to keep self-care a priority. It can be something as simple as drinking coffee with no distractions, or you could get a quick workout or lunch with a friend.
Stay in touch with your support system
Make time to be social. Your support system can be helpful in many ways. They may have a lead on a job for you, or they may simply be able to offer you a distraction or emotional support.
